Picking out my dreads was not my first option. I wanted to keep my dreads because it was easy to maintain. One day, I saw my curl pattern (without it being short as it was before). It was a long piece of hair that had this cute – tight – coil. So, I was locked for a year, however, one dread was still trying to loc in the front. So, I decided to start picking at it to see what more hair looked like with this curl pattern – then I started picking the next one and so forth. I couldn’t stop. I fell in love with my hair. I could never remember my hair as a child – when it was long and curly, so I never got the chance to experience my hair and have fun with it while loose.  Picking them out took 2 days for me. For some people, it takes weeks – depending on the length of your hair. It only took me two days because mine were shoulder length – I was so determined, I stayed up all night and kept going with a bobby pin. I didn’t mind the option of the BC, because as you saw from my pics, I am used to short hair – I love short hair, but I saw from various videos on Youtube, people doing it. I wanted to try it if I ever decided to let my locs go – however, I didn’t think it would be that early! LOL. I love my hair loose, but I do miss the locs because I love LOW MAINTENANCE! So, after picking them out, I trimmed my ends, gave my hair a good treatment, etc. I forgot how to do loose hair at one point! My sister had to help me! I’m back in the groove now and very happy!

My favorite style had to have been the TWA. I believe that was the cutest style that I ever had! I loved it! It was easy to do and always turned out right!

The main products that I use are Eco styling gel and the Keratin Mist by CHI. I have very curly hair and in order to define my curls a lot better, I use the Eco gel. I make sure I spray the Keratin Mist on my hair anytime I style. I don’t usually buy a lot of products and I like to keep what I put in my hair to a minimum.

Lexi- Thank you so much Kirsten for sharing your story. I actually thought about getting my hair loc’d but was afraid of the permanency of it. My boyfriend’s frat bro’s gf had locs one day…and the next time I saw her , her hair was loose. I had no idea that it could be done. I am sure it was alot of work though but it is good to know that it isn’t so permanent on everyone.

My topic involves my love of the total experience that being natural has allowed me to have. My last relaxer was in either November or December of 2008. I cannot remember exactly because like many other women, I did not plan on going natural. I moved to Europe for school and I did not really have a choice. Because I was so new to all of the extra extra extra new growth I pretty much wore my hair in ponytails the entire time that I was there. In May of 2009 my dad, who is a barber, cut my hair. He sort of gave me a fade and that is what I worked with. At first my hair was really dry and hard to manage. Before going completely natural, I had no experience with hair care or hair at all. I was lost! So, I watched a ton of youtube videos and did other research and soon started experimenting. Before I knew it, I had learned to tame my hair! I just love this whole experience. I am so glad that I do not have to deal with relaxers anymore. I have always feared the actual chemicals in relaxers. As a kid I heard stories of people being burned badly by the chemicals and I grew a bit worried each time I would relax. I am also loving not having to sit at the salon for hours and hours. Fortunately I have convinced my cousin and a friend to go natural. Yay! I’m loving being natural!

Lexi- Thank you so much Ashley. There are tons of reasons why people end up going natural so it’s great to hear all the reasons. Taking time to learn how to style your hair definitely is a life saver and saves a ton of money and shows others that being natural  can be easy with research. I am also happy you have encouraged other’s to go natural. You can find her on Youtube: Ashbobash87

So tonight I decided to do two strand twists. I washed and detangled thoroughly- that took some time.  It took 3  hours. I have such a lazy issue with my hair. I start them in the back all small…and by the time I get to the top, I rush through and they are bigger. Also, my twists are always fatter at the top and then super small at the bottom…I realize thats the reason alot of people buy hair to add into their twists. Maybe I should have used gel throughout so they wouldn’t swell up so much towards the top. Let’s see how long I can keep them in. Here they go

What do you do to keep your twists from swelling up so much towards the root?

…I don’t wash my hair for a couple of days after a wash and go and Not twisting/braiding at night- A mess occurs. Sometimes I get in my zones especially when I am not working (Yes! Please hire me! :-) ) ….so this is it. I wouldn’t dare think of getting a comb through it or even my fingers…My fingers wouldn’t even be able to move if I put it near the roots.  (These pics are from last night and not today) My mom asks me today “Ummm, what are you going to do to your hair?” I’m like “Ummm, what are you talking about? My hair is fine” …lol It reminded me of my friend Alex (male) who is supposed to be a Guest Blogger for my site (Alex, Where are you???) Anyway,  on a blog that he writes for, he made a comment about Natural Girls and basically talking about the ones that just walk outside and don’t even try to do their hair- he even mentioned ladies that don’t comb their hair.  Back story- he is a LOVER of ANY woman with natural hair. Back to the story- The natural nazis came out and blasted him saying that it was a choice. This one guy even blasted him saying that natural women don”t use combs and that he knows for a fact. (What? lol ) lol So Alex BBM’d me rather inquisitive asking if we Comb our hair because this guy told him to not make fun of natural women not combing because they aren’t supposed to comb their hair.

I got what my friend was saying though…and I’ve seen people say it on Twitter too. They talk about the naturals they see out in public who kind of give us a bad name. I’m talking about myself and others out there.  There are certain times that I haven’t done my hair in like 5 days and it is just a matted, tangled mess and I WILL go out the house if I have to. I have to do better. I know it sends a bad message to newly natural women or women considering transitioning…but I just realized at this moment that I am a culprit of this. My boyfriend will definitely let me know when its time to wash or do my hair. He tells me all the time that my Youtube Subscribers and women that read my blog would be in shock if they saw my hair on a normal day.  It even effects guys and what they think about natural women.  Of course we should all get breaks from having hair freshly done, but I will definitely step it up. Do you just have your days or weeks where you just let your hair go? What do you think when you see Natural women out and their hair isn’t in the best shape? lol I’ve heard some of you all on Twitter say you wish you could just take some ladies you see on the street and give them every natural hair tip you know. Please let me know your thoughts.

Target right now. That’s all. At this particular Target, they have the smaller bottle of KCCC. I’m not sure if they all have the smaller bottles or not. This is good for people that want to try it out though.

btw, I’ve been hearing that Miss Jessies is sold out or mostly out (as you can tell above) at most Targets in ATL so I found out if you make a purchase online over $30, you get free shipping if you want some in the meantime.

My mom picked up some Jane Carter Wrap & Roll for her rollersets. I’m sure she will like it. She is relaxed though.

So you want a weave, but don’t want to have to worry about having to keep you hair straight or doing twist outs and not worry about your hair reverting….Easy solution- get hair that matches your texture. More and more women are buying hair to get their hair to look like us..Surprising right? At first its to get straight hair down their back, now alot of women what the look of a natural without taking the plunge. Here are some options:

Halley’s Curls - Great price for the hair. It is processed, but I don’t care if its processed if it matches my hair texture :-) They have a sale going on the month of July! Woohoo! Im about to get some of the Creole Curly or Creole wavy.

Creole Curly                                                       Natural

Next we have All About My Hair in 2 textures (similar in price to Halleys Curls)

Kinky Curly                                                           Natural Coarse

Lastly, Bohyme Brazilian Wave – This is one that you can purchase at a BSS (Beauty Supply Store) BUT it sheds alot so you should seal it if you purchase. I used this before. Their promo picture doesn’t do the hair ANY justice. When you wet it, it has a great curl pattern. The picture below is how it looks straight out the pack. It looks similar to the AAMH Kinky Curly above.

When people think about a kinky curly type of texture usually it is a debate between those 3- Halleys Curls Creole Curly, AAMH Kinky Curly, and Bohyme Brazilian Wave. Depends on what you want to spend and how long you want it to last.

Remember when buying curly/kinky hair, the length is measured it it’s stretched state so if you order 18 inches…it may moreso be like 15 inches when it is wet.

Oh yeah, one more that is fairly new and getting recent buzz is Arjuni.  They actually sell hair using the Hair Typing system, but they don’t sell 4’s..unless it’s not avail online. With them it is online only and you have to sign up for a free phone consultation with them so they can find the best match for you.  Here is their 3c and  3d

I’m planning on getting a weave soon as my protective styling so I hope this helps some people that are thinking about a weave but don’t want to do the traditional straight hair and want less hassle dealing with their leave out.

My homie Fred of FreddyO.com posted this picture today. I LOVE Mya’s new hair color: The blonde and then it looks like either the ends are a reddish brown tone or the bottom layers of her hair is reddish brown. I can’t really tell. It’s so bold and very Kelis-ey (is that a word? lol). That type of blonde though always makes hair look dry and its so hard to keep moisturized. I could never go that light. My hair would look a HOT mess and super dry.

This reminds me, I HAVE to get my color touched up. This is the first time I dyed my whole head instead of highlights. Highlights don’t look as bad when it grows out….but the whole head…I think it looks bad. I have about 3 inches of dark, dark, dark brown roots. I will soon though.
